Effort to Stop the Largest Local Option Sales Tax Increase in Iowa Heats Up-
May 17, 2007, West Des Moines, Iowa
The state registered local ballot issue committee, NoLocalOption.com, is trying to prevent the largest ever expansion of the local option sales tax in Iowa.  Three Iowa Counties Polk, Dallas and Warren counties are joining forces to increase the local option sales tax by 17% on July 10, 2007.  This would affect most of the Des Moines metro area and make this the largest single local option tax increase in Iowa history.  Many Iowans are concerned about the proliferation of the local option taxes allowed by the State of Iowa.  They are scared of a 7% sales tax and what lies beyond that.  NoLocalOption.com is a grass roots effort to inhibit these local option Iowa taxes.  Their website, www.NoLocalOption.com , details many facts regarding this tax increase including additional solutions that will keep people in Iowa.  The site includes references that indicate Iowa taxes are very high and average wages are very low which creates a condition by which these new taxes must be challenged if we want to keep people working in Iowa.  The opposing group, www.YesToDestiny.org , Project Destiny, equates hundreds of dollars of additional taxes, which Iowans would be required to pay, to a penny.  Project destiny also includes a plan to connect all the existing bike trails in Iowa together which will attract people to stay in Iowa.  Many other  Iowans are concerned over the possibility the regional authority proposed to manage the new local option funds of this huge tax increase, will behave in a negative manner all too familiar to Iowans, in light of the CIETC scandal and others.  Either way, it will be decided, July 10, 2007.  The Project Destiny vote will go down in Iowa history.
